Concept2 servicing: keeping ergometers at factory feel
RowErgs, SkiErgs and BikeErgs are built to be punished. A little chain, flywheel and damper care keeps them smooth and accurate for a decade or more.

- Air ergometers are simple and durable, but the chain, damper and shock cord need care.
- Oil the RowErg chain regularly with light machine oil, never a degreaser or spray lubricant.
- Keep the flywheel housing dust-free so resistance stays accurate.
- A professional service twice a year keeps the feel and the monitor data honest.
Concept2 ergometers are the toughest machines in most gyms. There is no motor, no belt and no console to fail, just an air-braked flywheel and a handful of moving parts. That simplicity is exactly why they last, and also why the small maintenance they do need gets neglected. Skip it and a smooth, accurate erg slowly turns into a noisy, gritty one that no longer feels like the machine your members expect.
The chain (RowErg)
The RowErg chain is the part that most affects feel. A dry chain feels rough and rattly and wears the sprocket faster. Oil it regularly, roughly every 50 hours of use or whenever it looks and feels dry, with a light machine oil wiped along its length. In a busy commercial gym that can mean monthly. Avoid degreasers, WD-40 and heavy greases: they attract grit and gum up the works. Wipe off the excess so it does not fling onto the floor or the user.
The flywheel and housing
Air ergometers breathe. The flywheel pulls air through the housing, and with it dust, lint and chalk, which build up inside and on the screen, gradually changing the drag feel and the calibration. Vacuum the flywheel housing and wipe the cage periodically to keep resistance consistent and the monitor accurate. On the SkiErg and BikeErg the principle is identical: keep the air path clean.
If two of your rowers feel different at the same damper setting, dust in the housing is almost always the reason.
Damper, shock cord and rollers
The damper lever controls airflow and should move freely and stay where it is set; clean out the airflow path if it feels gritty or sticky. The shock cord (the bungee that returns the handle) stretches over time and eventually needs replacing when handle return goes slack. On the RowErg, the seat rollers and monorail take constant load: inspect the rollers for flat spots and keep the rail clean so the seat glides. The handle and its connection deserve a look too.
Keep the monitor honest. Erg data is a point of pride for members and coaches. A clean flywheel and a properly maintained machine keep split times accurate, which keeps your CrossFit and rowing crowd happy.
A simple ergometer service rhythm
| Frequency | Task |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Wipe down, inspect chain and seat rollers, check damper movement. |
| Monthly | Oil the RowErg chain, vacuum the flywheel housing. |
| 6-monthly | Professional service: shock cord, sprocket, rollers, full inspection and monitor check. |

Frequently asked questions
In a commercial setting, oil the chain roughly every 50 hours of use or whenever it feels dry, using a light machine oil. A busy gym may need this monthly or more.
Keep the flywheel housing and screen free of dust, oil the chain on the RowErg, check the damper and shock cord, inspect the handle and seat rollers, and verify the monitor reads correctly. A professional service every six months keeps them at factory feel.
Very. Air ergometers are mechanically simple and extremely durable, often lasting well over a decade. The wear items are the chain, shock cord, seat rollers and damper, all of which are serviceable.
